In the heart of Brazilian wildlife conservation lies an unwavering commitment to preserving wildlife. Our visit to AMPARA Silvestre, an extension of the Ampara Animal Institute and a partner of Jaguar Parade, unveiled a world of dedication, passion, and tireless efforts to protect and give a voice to Brazilian felines. In this article, we take you on a journey through the institute, sharing what they do, how they do it, and the unique experience we had while visiting the jaguar maintainer.

The Mission of AMPARA Silvestre

Since its establishment in 2016, AMPARA Silvestre has had a clear mission: to save, protect, and give a voice to Brazilian wildlife. Their mission is more than a commitment; it’s a passion translated into tangible actions across the country. The organization is involved in projects focused on wildlife conservation, emergency actions, animal welfare, human-wildlife coexistence, monitoring, and environmental education. Check out some of AMPARA Silvestre’s projects!

AMPARA in the Pantanal

In 2020, during the devastating wildfires that ravaged the Pantanal, AMPARA Silvestre sprang into action to assist the affected wildlife. The “PANTANAL em Chamas” operation mobilized substantial amounts of food and water, resulting in assistance to over 90 species and 451 rescue interventions.

Notable characters include Ousado, a jaguar reintroduced to the biome, and Tião, a tapir still under Ampara Animal Institute ‘s care in partnership with Sesc Pantanal. The organization is now completing the construction of its base in the Pantanal, which will become the first permanent wildlife care facility in the region, while they continue to monitor wildlife and plan new actions.

Binoculars of Freedom

The “Binoculars of Freedom” project highlights Brazil’s rich biodiversity, with nearly 10,000 species of vertebrates. However, it recognizes the need to improve animal welfare and respect the freedom and sentience of wildlife. Its goal is to raise awareness and sensitivity through environmental education and events that value wildlife, encouraging respect for animals in their natural habitat and reconnecting people with nature.

Wildlife Maintainer

AMPARA Silvestre houses eight remarkable felines, including five jaguars and three pumas. Their commitment is to ensure the well-being of these impressive animals that have been deprived of their freedom in the wild.

The enclosures are spacious and undergo a meticulous process of environmental enrichment, ensuring that the felines enjoy an existence that closely resembles life in the wild.

Unforgettable Visit: Jaguar Parade Team at the Jaguar Maintainer!

Our journey to AMPARA Silvestre with Jaguar Parade was a transformative experience. We witnessed firsthand the love and dedication with which the team cares for these magnificent felines. Each of the eight residents at the wildlife maintainer has a touching story, and AMPARA Silvestre ensures that their lives are as comfortable and close to nature as possible.

These felines fell victim to human interference and found refuge under their care. Unfortunately, these majestic felines cannot return to the wild. The organization is dedicated to providing them with a dignified life as close as possible to their natural reality. Check out some photos from our visit!
